Senior Process Engineer
Position Summary:
The successful candidate will be a senior member of the Process Simulation & Automation Group (PSA). Focus of work will be to direct and apply advanced knowledge of solid mechanics and thermal sciences to glass formation applications. This individual will have strong communication skills and must be proficient in the application of first principle concepts to formulate process understanding improvement and identify potential process automation. This individual will be a technical leader identifying opportunities leading to potential products and improvements through the application of PSA Group results. This position is a senior level engineering position reporting to an Engineering Manager.
Position Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will be able to synthesize experimental, analytical and numerical results into a methodology describing the desired glass behavior by providing technical leadership in the identification and development of process understanding and automation. Provides guidance to ensure technically sound mathematical models utilizing analytical and numerical methods to describe glass formation physics are utilized in the Group. Appropriateness of the model assumptions and the accuracy of the results must be assessed by the individual and conveyed to their peers during technical reviews. Provide technical opinions and positions concerning the formation and inspection of glass containers. These technical positions will provide guidance to the process development teams in the application of automation of the processes and define alternative processes. Defines and directs model validation experiments for the correlation of the process physics models. Provides project leadership and budgetary control on major projects as assigned. Mentors, coaches and trains less senior staff members. Engages in collaborative applied research with Universities and Research Centers.
Education Required:
Course of study required: MS in Engineering (Mechanical or Chemical) or Physics, preferred: PhD in Engineering or Physics. Areas of expertise to include: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics and thermal sciences are preferred.
Computer skills:
Demonstrated expertise of Nation Instruments LabView, and MatLab, or similar numerical tools is preferred. Knowledge of general FEA programs, such as ANSYS, and CFD programs, such as Fluent, would be preferred.
Experience Required:
Minimum of ten years experience in an RD&E environment identifying, developing and leading process analysis in similar industries, such as polymer processing, metals forming, or preferably glass container formation. Experience in process improvement through the application of the analytical or numerical analysis is desirable. This experience should include the application of coupled fluid dynamics, preferably visco-elastic, and heat transfer solutions to improve a process and/or define an alternative process. Areas of heat transfer experience should include conduction, convection and radiation. Experience in coupling the thermal-fluid analysis to stress states is preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Provides occasional supervisory guidance to temporary employees, new hires, consultants and other assigned less senior staff personnel.
