Vision Engineer
Position Summary:
The successful candidate will be a member of the Process Simulation & Automation (PSA) Group. Focus of work will be to apply advanced knowledge of vision acquisition and image analysis to glass formation applications. This individual will have strong communication skills and must be proficient in the use of commercial data acquisition software, such as National Instruments LabView. Emphasis of applied research will be to provide vision sensor solutions to measure glass forming process variables, to provide feedback control to process machinery and to render three-dimensional geometric models from captured images. These results will be utilized by other Engineering teams for product development, fundamental process understanding and to support experimental efforts of the RD&E Team. This position is an intermediate level engineering position reporting to an Engineering Manager, with direction from a Senior Engineer as appropriate.
Position Responsibilities:
Development of vision based data acquisition methods for temperature, shape, position and defects of molten glass and the various process stages leading to a fully formed container. Recommend and implement appropriate sensor technologies and data acquisition requirements for product development, fundamental process understanding and to support experimental efforts. Assess state of the art in sensor technology and image analysis methods. Provide technical opinions and positions concerning sensor development and image analysis. These technical positions will provide the basis of image analysis research efforts for the PSA Group. Participate in the definition and execution of experiments for the correlation of the process physics models for validation.
Education Required:
BS in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics. Preferred: MS in Engineering or Physics with concentration in optics, data acquisition or image based model generation. Knowledge of general Engineering topics, such as dynamics and vector mechanics are desirable.
Computer Skills:
Proficient with commercial data acquisition software, such as National Instruments LabView. Knowledge of Matlab, Mathematica, or Maple would be helpful.
Experience Required:
Minimum of five years experience in an RD&E environment developing image capture and analysis in similar industries, such as polymer processing, paper making, metals forming, or preferably glass container formation. Experience in process improvement through the application of vision sensors in the IR, Near IR and visible range along with image analysis routines is desirable. Experience in the development of precise three dimensional mathematical models from captured images is preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no regular supervisory responsibilities, however, provides occasional supervisory guidance to temporary employees, new hires, consultants and other assigned staff personnel.
