New Refractory Expendable Material - 301
November\December2011 - Emhart Glass Manufacturing in Owensville, Missouri produces a variety of expendable refractories for the glass industry, using different materials based on the specific application. Some of those materials are specifically targeted towards long refractory life. One of the most effective means of increasing refractory life is with the use of zirconium oxide. Pure zirconium oxide tends to have poor thermal shock properties, which makes it difficult to install into a hot feeder. As a result, zirconium oxide is generally used as an additive to increase the refractory’s resistance to glass corrosion. Emhart Glass material 333 is considered a “work horse” mix. It contains 11% zirconium oxide, and is considered the standard material for a variety of expendable parts. Emhart Glass material 315 is considered a “premium” mix. It contains 20% zirconium oxide and provides 10-15% longer refractory life than 333 in most situations with only a small reduction in thermal shock resistance.
Now, Emhart Glass is offering an “ultra-premium” material which contains 35% zirconium oxide and is
designated 301. In both laboratory and field trials, it displays 10-15% longer refractory life than 315, without sacrificing thermal shock resistance. The material can be installed into a hot feeder without the need for special procedures, simply preheat the part and install. Expendable orifice rings, tubes, plungers, and spouts made in 301 have all seen service in various glass plants over the last 2 years with excellent results, including flint, amber, and green container glass.
With its culture of innovation, Emhart Glass continues to develop new products and materials to address the needs of its customers, while maintaining the quality and craftsmanship that has made it a leader in the global glass expendable market.
